About Us - Partnership With IMHRO

In 2009, SunshineFrom Darkness announced its affiliation with the International Mental Health Research Organization, an international organization committed to supporting research to help people with brain disease, and, ultimately, find cures for schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder.
By collaborating with IMHRO we can ensure that funds raised by Sunshine from Darkness will have the greatest impact on finding the most effective treatments for the entire span of mental health disorders.

IMHRO has raised $87 million to date for research and has funded top-notch mental health research projects and scientists who have made breakthroughs that have helped thousands of patients around the world. The strides our scientists have made have been so significant that groups such as the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) have given them follow-up grants to expand their research, totaling $44 million to date. These grants have more than doubled the money given to these projects by donors through IMHRO. Through this cooperation between the private and public sectors, IMHRO’s fundraising model multiplies research funding and speeds the search for cures.

Our Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) is comprised of nine of the world's top neuroscientists. We invite programs to apply for a grant in the areas of schizophrenia, depression and bipolar research we determine to be most likely to spark fruitful discoveries. The SAB helps us choose the most promising programs to fund. When discoveries are made these scientists share their results throughout the research community to speed progress at large.

IMHRO is currently developing a national ad campaign with award winning actress Glenn Close to help erase the stigma of mental illness. This campaign will bring attention to the issue of mental illness and its devastating impact. Brain diseases are the leading cause of disability worldwide. Major mental illness afflicts 20% of the world's population, or 57 million people in the U.S. alone. The cost in suffering is incalculable; what can be tallied is the toll in treatment cost, lost productivity and prison housing: more than $300 billion per year in the U.S. alone. Despite these known facts, brain disorders are the most underfunded disorders in U.S. healthcare today. We are very excited that a major focus of IMHRO is to raise public awareness and decrease stigma.
